how the bun-bun hat was born

A few months ago, I was unexpectedly invited to a baby shower. We were told not to worry about gifts, but I really wanted to give my friend a little something. My mind scrambled for a quick project that I could do in my still-unfinished studio.

After wondering what she would like for her little one's first winter, I thought a cozy hat might do the trick. First, I needed a pattern. The one infant hat pattern I have is just a couple of semicircles with a brim - way too plain to be something special. I've always loved those little top-knot caps, so I got to work designing a couple of styles, based on some pictures I found around the Web.

Then, I moved on to the material. I have been playing around with recycling T-shirts for a variety of sewing projects. The local thrift stores usually have plenty of gently used ones, and they often have bag sales ($2 or $3 for all you can stuff into a brown bag). This seemed like a great project to use up a couple of colorful Tees that had been hanging around, waiting to be used for something. I grabbed a couple likely candidates (a red, green, blue and yellow stripe and a soft, buttery yellow), and started cutting.

My first attempt, with the striped fabric, ended up slightly wonky; the stripes didn't want to meet at the seams, thwarting my every effort to pin them into submission. I finished it, but set it aside. The second hat, made with the soft, ribbed yellow, came out perfectly. I had made a bunny hat, with little ears that could be left long or tied into two knots, like pigtails.

I wanted to call it something a bit more original than Bunny Hat. Thus, the "bun-bun hat" was born.

I can see myself making many more of these for my babes and other little ones. Alden loves the stripey dud I created with my first try (he calls it his pirate hat - "AR!"). And little Bunny will have a bun-bun hat of his/her own, which I plan to sew up this week. Yeah! I'm finally back into crafting!
