random Wednesday: diggin' in
I just spent the past half-hour in the garden digging and weeding. The blueberry bushes I bought a few weeks ago seem to love their spot under the pine at the edge of our plot. Upon inspecting last year's untouched patch, I found dozens of tomato plants (good thing I just bought some yesterday!), garlic I managed to not harvest last fall (a bonus, since we didn't plant any replacements!) and flowers on my strawberries (only a few weeks until harvest!).
We have had rabbit problems in the past, but it appears we now have two strays taking care of these pesky leaf nibblers (along with the trucks on the highway - I just discovered the bunny I saw just a few mornings ago has taken the fast way to that great lettuce patch in the sky). Thankfully, we haven't had any deer problems. The dogs keep them at bay.
I hope to have the entire plot planted by the end of this weekend. Our seed list has stayed pretty close to what we actually eat. We'll have watermelon, tomatoes, lettuce, peas, carrots, beets, cucumbers, pumpkins and some herbs, and I can't wait to bite into the first pick of the summer - yum!
