A happy Mother's Day
I had a glorious day today (and a fabulous weekend overall). Before going to breakfast with the boys this morning, I opened the door to find this greeting on the stoop:
Makes you smile, doesn't it? (Of course, it doesn't. It probably makes you want to hurl, but please play along to protect my fragile sanity, m'kay?)
Anyway, this weekend, I spent many hours in the garden as a treat to myself (c'mon, don't you find manual labor relaxing?). The flower bed on one side of our entryway needed some tidying after I unceremoniously threw some plants in that general direction last year. I dug in, and managed to finish everything except the new gravel drainage area that goes under the eaves.
I added a brownstone walkway to make it easier to weed, and moved a bunch of the plants around. For once, I really thought about plant pairings, including leaf shape, plant size and flower color. I am a landscape rock star! (Oh my. That was a terribly unexpected pun. Sorry about that. If you don't see it, please move along now. There you go.)
Crabgrass ate nearly all of this area last year, so I also laid down some cypress mulch. (It smells heavenly, but I'm going to look for a local product since we're trying to be more sustainable-minded in our purchasing habits - you know, "Save-the-planet! Cut me down some trees and shred 'em up so I don't have to weed every stinkin' day.") I hope to spend more time enjoying the garden this summer, and less time avoiding it because I can't stand the sight of all that crabgrass (It makes me feel lazy. I know that I am, and I don't need my garden to point it out to everyone who passes by.)
Tomorrow, I'll have a longer update, with news about some big changes coming up for me. (I got a job offer! I'm not taking it! I'm still "getting a job." No, I don't know what that means, either.) Hope all you moms had a lovely day! Me and my parenthetical phrases are going to bed (no, really!).

In regards to being sustainable and the use of cypress mulch. The trees are not farmed. They are 70+ year old cypress trees that serve to protect our coast from storm surges.
The next time anyone goes to get mulch please use something other than cypress.

Thanks for the info (spam?), Jeffrey. As I mentioned in my post, I am looking for local mulch, since we live in lumber country. It shouldn't be too hard to get my hands on some.
I smiled at your chalk message from your hubby. I love it when Kevin does similar things for me and I love seeing other couples do sweet things like that. What can I say? I'm a sap.
