sketchbook Monday: star tree skirt

I had this question pop into my head today: Why are tree skirts always round? A circle is easy, for sure, but wouldn't it be cool to have a different shape?

If you ever visit my house, you'll notice I have a thing for stars. So, I did some surfing around, and found an 8-pointed star and a Texas (6-point) star, but I couldn't find anything that was a regular, 5-point star. I really want one, so I guess I'll need to make it.

Here is my idea in sketch form (sorry for the terrible pic...I'll try to replace it with a better one tomorrow). I think the top of the big points need to be more gothic arch in style to account for the curve to go up the tree stand, so I'll change that when I make the pattern. I'm also thinking about beads or embroidery or maybe some contrasting quilting.

I'll be sure to share pics when I'm done.
