When a plan falls apart...

You pick yourself up and make a new one.

AJ's not really interested in setting up NIB anymore (don't try to deny it, hon...it's okay!).

This leaves us with a website of partial content, paid domain hosting, and me stuck for writing jobs. I can't write during the day, so taking on business writing projects by myself would be really difficult. Some folks may be flexible, but most want to deal with you during regular business hours. Hmm...maybe I need to target businesses on the West Coast to take advantage of the time difference...perhaps that's a solution.

I'm also thinking of going with the stock content solutions I originally wanted to do, but this will take about a year to create and set up. Other ideas include a business technology blog with paid advertising to cover expenses and bring in a little extra cash (maybe $100 per month), hunting down freelance writing gigs online (tougher than finding a warm spot in our house on a cold day), picking up a contract researcher/writer/editor position with flexible hours (they're out there, I've had one).

I could also change NIB into a newsletter writing business. I have plenty of experience researching and writing them. Plus, there's a big demand for them in the online world. Everyone wants an Email newsletter, but not everyone has the time to sit down and write one. I could write them and send the finished product to the company for distribution. No major overhead, and no major problems with working at night since communication will be by Email.

I've also considered doing marketing/pr for artists. NIB could be a one-person agency for musicians, visual artists and performance artists who do their own booking, but need someone to manage their publicity. This really appeals to me because I have so many artist friends who might have time to search for gigs or gallery showings, but really need help writing press releases, creating press kits, designing posters, laying out CD covers, etc.

In the end, I guess I'm stuck again. I'm interested in all of the ideas above, but the artist publicity agency really strikes me as a good fit. Plus, I could blog about artist publicity to gain exposure and help out artists who need help with their publicity. The only thing holding me back from this is the money. Can I make enough (and do I want to) by supporting artists who are just trying to make a living themselves?

I need to learn the fine art of making a living...advice anyone?

It's not that I don't want to do Nib, it's that it doesn't really excite me. If that's what we need to do to make things come together for us, then I can keep going. In fact, I was planning on keeping going, since I think it's probably the only practical way to get us both working from home sooner rather than later.

So don't fret too much. Just give me pep talks every now and then and promise me wonderful things and I'll keep trudging through the desert, looking at all the beautiful mirages.

The not-so-crazy thing is, I'm not thrilled about it either. I was thinking if we tweak the idea a little bit, we could perhaps write for more interesting projects than catalogs for janitor supply companies. What do you think about artist publicity? Or specializing in Website content?

I wrote this post last night because I finally realized it's hard to stay motivated to work on something that bores you to the point of disinterest. So, perhaps we should change our writing focus to something that interests us. What do you think?

Meg,

Whenever you are feeling down about this, just walk up to AJ, tweak his nipples and say: "Trick-or-treat for nipples!" Works every time....
