The business of writing

AJ finally quit his job! YEAH!!!

Most people would think being 7 months pregnant with an unemployed husband and a job that pays only enough for food and half our bills would be scary. It is, but not to the extent that it could be.

That's mostly because AJ is not really unemployed. He's self-employed!

As many of you know, we have been working on putting a business writing business together for the last several months. Bit by bit, we've pieced together financials, a business plan, the foundations of a website, marketing ideas, product and service plans. I've had tons of fun doing it, but realized I'd never be able to actually start the business given the amount of time I have during any given day after work, chores, sleep, etc.

Then, AJ quit his job. While a lot of people were surprised, I was simply relieved. His work situation has been terrible for the last six months, and I was hoping either something would give, or he would simply leave. It came down to option B.

At first, he didn't have a definite plan for work (which was fine with me -- I was just happy to get AJ back from the brink of job-induced insanity). Within two days though, he decided to work on the writing business. Now, with the anxiety caused by a psychotic work environment out of the way, he can concentrate on making it really happen. So, he's attacked the website with gusto, writing copy and creating a design that will work in most browsers.

Where does this leave me, you ask? I've decided to stay at The Daily Press. The business needs to be well-established before I take the full-time writing leap, and let go of the corporate life line. I'll still be working for the writing business, but it will be on an as needed basis.

It feels good to have a plan. I like having the option to do some writing on the side. I also like having the safety of my job at the Press (even as frustrating as it is some days). And, if things don't work out as planned, we'll figure something else out.

Life is improvisation...
