Bedrest and the active girl: a guide to not losing your mind
As many of you know, I am in week two of my bedrest because of my little bout with pre-term labor. It's terribly boring just sitting around, and I've come up with some interesting things to pass the time. For instance, I'm contemplating just how long I can grow my toenails before my feet won't fit in my shoes or how thick the dust can get on the television set before I can't see the picture. I'm also knitting my frustrations into a lovely blanket.
Actually, that last bit is true. I've taken to knitting while watching a movie or listening to the radio. I'm not quite sure if I'll finish the blanket (a purely selfish creation in soft, mohair-like yarn), but the knitting sure makes time spin by a lot faster.
I'm also going to try to get some writing done. I wanted to write the old-fashion way (you know, paper and pen). However, the drugs they have me on have made it next to impossible to write straight. So, I think I'll use AJ's laptop or sneak into my office (like now) for a little writing session.
Tomorrow I go in for another check-up. I'm still having contractions, and the terbutaline makes me all sorts of jittery. I'm sure my doc will be happy to have me make it to next week so I can just do the labor thing whenever, and we don't need to worry too much about the beestling having any trouble (however minor it would be at this point).
Meanwhile, from my couch (aka "throne"), I've been dictating what needs to get done. We've been putting the finishing touches on the nursery (I was naughty, and climbed the stairs to supervise). AJ has been such a trooper; picking up the slack while I'm on bedrest (i.e. doing all the chores and all the extra stuff I wanted to do before the baby makes his/her appearance).
So, it won't be long til the source of this trouble finally makes an appearance. Upon entry into the world, AJ has promised the first thing the kid hears will be, "Your grounded!"
Until then, I will continue to knit the time away...

Hi Megan! Kelly told me you were on bedrest, so i made my way over to your virtual domain this morning amidst my momsomnia (see my blog at www.mothersong.typepad.com) and checked you out. I hope things are going well, and I am glad to hear you are knitting. I thought you might like some movie suggestions from this mom who has been watching far too many over the past 10 months. So, try out: The Saddest Music in the World (something like that -- very strange and beautiful and Canadian, Eternal SUnshine of the SPotless Mind, Tupac:The Resurrection (Andy's favorite musician -- this is an awesome documentary), A Home at the End of the WOrld.
That should get you through this week at least. You could also start reading some momoir, the genre you will undoubtedly get into soon if you haven't already. Try these books: Breeder (awesome alternamom accounts of mothering), www.literarymama.com, The Big Rumpus by AYun Halliday, Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott,Mother Shock by ANdrea BUchanan.
I hope these suggestions help with your recently inactive lifestyle, and I wish you a safe and healthy labor and baby.
ALl my love to you and AJ and the Beestling,
Heidi Howes
Thanks so much for the support and info, Heidi! I'll send the hubby out to pick up some of those movies tomorrow.
I did read a great book just last week - "From Here to Maternity" by a couple of new mommies (can't remember names). It was funny and a nice, easy read (200+ pages all in one day!).
I'm pretty hooked on knitting and listening to the radio, too. It really does make the time go by so quickly, and also acts as a sort of meditation. I'm also looking at bedrest as an excuse to rest up before the big arrival. Now if I could just shake the insomnia!
Hugs and much love to you, Andy, and your babe!
