The man living next door

My husband and I had a lovely conversation about participles this morning. It went something like this:

"Honey, what's a participle?"

"Uh, I know it's a part of speech, but I can't remember which part."

So, instead of rummaging around in my oh-so-cluttered brain, I whipped out "Understanding the English Language." Yes, folks, it's been seven years since I graduated college. Yes, I still have all my geeky English books. At least I now know what a participle is. :P

On the drive to work this morning I read through a bit of my grammar text, and realized I didn't give two cents about the class when I took it. All of a sudden, however, I want to remember what gerunds are, and how to diagram sentences. Dear lord, make it stop!

Points to the person who recognizes the participial phrase in the title of this here post...
