Hello, Thesaurus, my old friend

Apparently, I'm destined to be a writer. At least of sorts. I took a personality profile test, and ended up with a list of likely careers given my predilection toward introvertedness. The short list included clergy (which would suit me about as well as a bad habit...lol), therapist (my mother-in-law -- a former therapist -- has discouraged it), and artist (musician, writer, visual artist -- gee, I haven't done any of that stuff before).

So, the answer to all I have been seeking in life stared me straight in the face. Thus, I will write. In fact, after listening to Ben Marin and a guest discuss blogs on Wisconsin Public Radio this afternoon, I've decided to give my blog a focus: writing!

My passion for words hit a dormant patch as soon as I left school. Although I still read voraciously, I just haven't taken the opportunity to actually string some of my own literary gems together. I've been stuck in Visual Arts Land, consumed by spatial relationships, color theory and font selection.

While my foray into the graphic design world hasn't been completely uninteresting, it has left a hole. When I worked as an editor for Visual Arts Trends, I again glimpsed the power of words, and the seduction of writing. It was like coming home after being gone for years.

The more I think about it, the more I become attracted to writing for a living. Not just because I find writing exhiliarating, but because I truly believe we would be lost without words.

Words allow us to express our feelings, wants, desires, needs. They supply a means toward reaching an understanding. Try to resolve a conflict with images...it won't work. Perhaps that hits to the heart of why I love words so -- they provide a way to be both creative and utilitarian.

I finally feel as though I have a clear mission not only for my blog, but for my life as well. Words, words, words...
